About Tiny Prague

A low-poly 3D map of Prague running right in your browser. Inspired by the project Tiny Warsaw (Dominik Roszkowski); all the code was written anew for Prague.

Where the data comes from

How it works

Routes for walking, cycling, e-bikes and cars are computed right in your browser on the OSM street network (for bikes, cycle paths, surface and elevation are taken into account). Public transport connections are estimated from PID line routes without timetables. A shared link contains the whole route, nothing is stored on the server.

Thirteen of the best-known landmarks (Charles Bridge with its bridge towers, the town hall tower with the Astronomical Clock, Týn Church, Powder Tower, Petřín Tower, Dancing House, National Theatre, National Museum, the Vyšehrad basilica, Vítkov, Emmaus) are hand-written low-poly models placed on their real OSM footprints. The metro is shown as an x-ray underground at the real depth of its stations (from the Czech Wikipedia station articles, interpolated in between), train positions come from PID data; the Petřín funicular runs to its timetable. In Prague Zoo the animals wander around their enclosures according to OSM data.

Buildings are generated from OSM outlines (height from the tags height a building:levels, otherwise estimated from the building type). Windows and their night lighting are drawn by a shader. The ground (streets, parks, water) is painted into a texture for every square kilometre and draped over the terrain. The browser downloads the map in small pieces as you look around and renders everything with three.js and WebGL.
